As to old year turns inexorably into the new, things are moving towards crisis point for Liverpool. Lying seventh in the English Premiership, a massive 12 points behind high-riding Chelsea the Reds have to start clawing their way back towards the head of the league table to have any chance of European competition next season.
And they have to start doing it now before the logjam of festive season fixtures comes around. They have a difficult task against third-placed Arsenal this weekend - made doubly so by this being the only Sunday match of the weekend, so both sides will know exactly what has to be done to improve their positions.
Liverpool has been priced at 11/10 given that they play at Anfield, with the Gunners on the boards at 2/1 - a tempting double your money bet. But a win can put Liverpool realistically no better than fifth, and for that to happen, both Manchester City, who have a game in hand, and Aston Villa. For the Merseysiders to squeak into the top four Spurs will have to lose and without scoring while Liverpool would have to win by four clear goals, not the most likely scenario.
A glance at where the top 10 sides are right now and any possible alterations to those standings is worth considering before you place a bet. Chelsea should keep their momentum at home to struggling Everton, with the Blues a fairly predictable 2/9 and the visitors 9/1, so no real chance of a change there.
Manchester United, four points behind Chelsea going into the weekend but with no chance of losing second spot whatever the result, have a much tougher one facing them, but are still 2/5 to beat 6/1 Villa, who lie fifth, at Old Trafford.
Again, this match should play out the way the oddsmakers see things, but it might be worth your while to look at the 11/4 available for a draw. Fourth-placed Spurs are priced at 2/7 at home to Wolves, who are 8/1 and unlikely on current form to produce an upset. So, if Arsenal slip up on Sunday, Tottenham could slip into third spot, but if they and the Gunners both come a cropper, a win for Villa could propel them into third.
Manchester City, one spot above Liverpool are 8/11 away to 10/3 Bolton and should end up with the three points to give them a total of 28, Arsenal's total going into this round. Immediately below Liverpool, Fulham are 8/5 for their trip to Burnley, who are 11/8, and Birmingham, 10/11 at home to 5/2 West Ham with the draw at 11/5. And, as the gypsy said gazing into the crystal ball, all will be revealed come Monday morning.
